Ceramides, explained

Roughly half of your skin barrier's lipid content by mass — what ceramides do, why levels fall, and how to spot a formula that takes them seriously.

If skincare has one genuinely foundational ingredient, this is it. The outer layer of your skin is built like a brick wall: dead, flattened cells are the bricks, and a lipid matrix is the mortar holding them together and keeping water in. Ceramides are the dominant component of that mortar — published work puts them at roughly 50% of the intercellular lipid by weight, alongside cholesterol at around 27% and free fatty acids at around 10%. Everything a moisturizer is trying to achieve comes back to keeping that mortar intact.

What ceramides do

Two jobs, and they are the same job seen from two sides. They keep water in — a healthy lipid matrix dramatically slows transepidermal water loss, which is the technical name for moisture evaporating out through the skin. And they keep irritants out — the same matrix is a physical barrier to allergens, pollutants and microbes. When ceramide levels fall, both functions degrade at once, which is why a compromised barrier presents simultaneously as dryness and new sensitivity to products that never used to sting.

This is not a cosmetic-marketing claim. Specific ceramide species are documented as decreased in the skin of people with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, and those decreases correlate with the barrier and water-holding dysfunction that characterizes both conditions. The ceramide-cholesterol-fatty acid ratio being disrupted is a described feature of atopic dermatitis, not a supposition.

Why your levels drop

  • Age. Ceramide production declines steadily from around your thirties onward. This is the single biggest reason skin that never needed moisturizer suddenly does.
  • Over-cleansing. Surfactants do not distinguish between the sebum you want gone and the barrier lipids you do not. This is the most common self-inflicted cause — see our cleanser roundup for the gentler options.
  • Over-exfoliation. Acids and scrubs used too often remove the outer layer faster than it can rebuild.
  • Cold, dry air and low humidity. Winter is a barrier problem more than a hydration problem.
  • Retinoids during the adjustment phase. Temporary, expected, and exactly why ceramide products and retinoids belong in the same routine.

Reading a ceramide label

On an ingredient list they appear by a naming convention that looks cryptic and is actually informative. Ceramide NP (previously ceramide 3), Ceramide AP (ceramide 6-II) and Ceramide EOP(ceramide 1) are the three you will see most, and the letters describe the fatty acid and sphingoid base — N for non-hydroxy, A for alpha-hydroxy, EO for esterified omega-hydroxy, P for phytosphingosine. The skin's own supply contains many subclasses of this kind; no cosmetic reproduces the whole set.

What separates a serious formula from a token one is two things. First, position: if ceramides appear at the very bottom of a long list, below the fragrance, they are there for the label. Second, and more importantly, company: ceramides work best alongside cholesterol and fatty acids, because the barrier is a mixture and repairing it with one component alone is less effective. Ceramides versus the other moisturizing ingredients

A good moisturizer does three separate things, and it is worth knowing which ingredient does which. Humectants — glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea — pull water into the outer layer. Emollients — squalane, fatty alcohols, plant oils — fill the gaps between cells so skin feels smooth. Occlusives — petrolatum, dimethicone, waxes — form a film that slows evaporation. Ceramides sit slightly outside this trio: they are not primarily sealing or attracting water, they are replacing a missing structural component. That is why they are the repair ingredient rather than the comfort ingredient, and why their benefit accumulates over weeks rather than being felt in the first five minutes.

Who should prioritize them

Anyone with dry, tight or flaky skin. Anyone whose skin has become newly reactive — that is usually a barrier problem, not a sudden allergy. Anyone using a retinoid or an exfoliating acid, where a ceramide moisturizer is the difference between a manageable adjustment and quitting. Eczema-prone skin, where the ceramide deficit is documented. And, less obviously, oily skin that feels tight after washing: oil and barrier lipids are different things, and an oily face can have a leaky barrier.

Can oily skin use ceramides?
Yes, and often should. Sebum and barrier lipids are different things — you can be oily and still have a leaky barrier, which is exactly what tight, stinging skin after cleansing indicates. Choose a ceramide lotion or gel-cream rather than a heavy tub.
Are ceramides better than hyaluronic acid?
They do different jobs. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws water into the outer layer and works immediately; ceramides replace a structural component and work over weeks. A good moisturizer usually contains both, and if you are choosing one for genuinely damaged skin, choose ceramides.
Why do ceramide levels fall?
Age is the main driver — production declines from around your thirties. Over-cleansing, over-exfoliation, cold dry air and the adjustment phase of a retinoid all deplete them faster than skin replaces them.
How long do ceramide products take to work?
