Chemical vs mineral sunscreen: the honest comparison
Two ways of stopping the same photons. Neither is a health hazard, both are regulated — the real decision is about your skin tone, your skin's reactivity, and what you will actually wear.

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin and both scatter and absorb UV. Chemical sunscreens use organic filters — avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, homosalate and others — which absorb UV and convert it to a negligible amount of heat. Both are regulated as over-the-counter drugs in the United States. Both work. The choice between them is cosmetic and dermatological, not a safety verdict, and the internet has spent a decade pretending otherwise.
Here is the honest framing: the best sunscreen is the one you will apply generously and reapply. A mineral formula you skip because it leaves you ashen protects nothing; a chemical formula you abandon because it stings your eyes protects nothing either. So choose on finish, cast and comfort — the properties that determine whether the bottle gets used.
What the FDA label means, either way
Both types must meet the same regulated claims. Broad spectrumrequires passing an in vitro test demonstrating a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm — the UVA assurance. Only broad spectrum sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher may claim to reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging when used as directed; anything else may only claim to help prevent sunburn. Water resistant must be qualified as 40 or 80 minutes, and the words waterproof, sweatproof and sunblock are prohibited. No sunscreen may claim protection beyond two hours without reapplication unless the manufacturer has submitted data and obtained FDA approval. None of these rules distinguishes between mineral and chemical — the standard is identical.
Mineral: the case for and against
For: zinc oxide is the gentlest broad-spectrum filter available and the default recommendation for reactive skin, rosacea, post-procedure skin and young children. It works from the moment it is applied. It rarely stings eyes. And because it sits on the surface rather than being absorbed, it is the choice for anyone who prefers to minimize what their skin takes up.
Against: the same optical property that makes it work makes it visible. Zinc and titanium scatter visible light as well as UV, which is what a white cast is. On deeper skin tones this is not a minor cosmetic annoyance — it is the reason a great many people stopped wearing sunscreen at all. Mineral formulas are also thicker, harder to spread, and more likely to pill under makeup.
Chemical: the case for and against
For: cosmetic elegance, and it is not a small thing. Chemical filters can be formulated into clear gels and weightless fluids with no cast at all on any skin tone, which makes generous daily application realistic. They spread further per milliliter, hold up better under makeup, and generally cost less per ounce.
Against: they are more likely to sting eyes, more likely to irritate reactive or rosacea-prone skin, and some filters degrade in sunlight and need stabilizers to maintain protection. If you have tried three sunscreens and all three burned, chemical filters are the likely culprit and mineral is the answer.
The hybrid option nobody mentions
Many of the best facial sunscreens are neither purely one nor the other. How to choose, in three questions
- Does your skin react to things? Rosacea, eczema, post-procedure, or a history of stinging sunscreens → mineral, or zinc-led hybrid.
- Is a white cast a dealbreaker for your skin tone? → chemical, or a tinted mineral formula, which uses iron oxides to offset the cast (and offers some visible light protection as a bonus).
- Will you wear it every day? This is the deciding question. Whichever answer produces a bottle you finish is correct.
Two things that matter more than the filter type
Amount.SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimeter — roughly a third of a teaspoon for a face and neck, which is visibly more than most people use. Under-application does not shave a few points off the number; it drops protection sharply. Reapplication. No US sunscreen may claim more than two hours of protection without reapplying unless it has FDA-approved data supporting it. Getting these two right with a cheap chemical sunscreen beats getting them wrong with an expensive mineral one, by a wide margin.
