DIY skincare at home: what is safe, what burns, and what is simply pointless

Most DIY skincare recipes fail for the same three reasons — no preservative, no pH control, no penetration. Here is the short list of what is genuinely fine, and the list that sends people to a dermatologist.

Most DIY skincare does not work, and a small but well-documented subset of it causes real injury. That is not gatekeeping on behalf of the beauty industry — it is three specific technical problems that a kitchen cannot solve: you cannot preserve a water-containing product, you cannot control pH, and you cannot make most actives penetrate. This page explains all three, then gives you the short honest list of what is fine to make at home.

Problem one: anything with water grows things

The moment you combine water with a botanical, a food, or anything organic, you have made microbial growth medium. Commercial skincare contains preservatives for precisely this reason, and the amount required is small, specific, and not something you can eyeball. A homemade cream, mask or toner containing water, aloe, tea, milk, fruit or honey begins growing bacteria and mold within days — often before it looks or smells wrong.

"I keep it in the fridge" slows this down; it does not stop it. Refrigeration buys days, not weeks, and it does nothing about the organisms introduced by dipping fingers into the jar. Problem two: pH decides whether an active works or burns

Acids are the most popular DIY category and the most dangerous one. Whether an acid exfoliates gently or damages skin depends almost entirely on concentration and pH, and a lemon has neither printed on it. Lemon juice sits around pH 2, far below the range any leave-on cosmetic acid is formulated at, and it also contains furocoumarins that cause phytophotodermatitis — a genuine chemical burn triggered by sun exposure after contact. Documented cases are not rare.

The same problem applies in reverse to baking soda, which is strongly alkaline. Skin sits at roughly pH 4.7–5.5 and its barrier enzymes depend on that. Washing with baking soda swings it to around pH 9, which is why the first few uses feel "deeply clean" and the following weeks produce tightness, flaking and sensitivity. Problem three: mixing an ingredient in does not deliver it

A great deal of DIY logic runs: this ingredient is good for skin, therefore putting it on my skin is good. But most actives need a delivery system. Vitamin C in an orange is ascorbic acid at a low, unstable concentration in a matrix designed to be eaten; a vitamin C serum is a stabilized formulation at a controlled pH with antioxidant partners, and it took the industry years to get right. Crushing a vitamin C tablet into water produces a solution that oxidizes within hours.

The same applies to retinol (light- and air-sensitive, needs encapsulation), niacinamide (fine in water, but you need to know the percentage) and peptides (dose-specific and fragile). Enthusiasm is not a formulation.

The four DIY recipes that most reliably cause harm

  • Lemon juice on the face, as a brightener or spot treatment. pH around 2 plus phototoxic compounds. This is the one that produces the burns you see in dermatology case reports.
  • Baking soda as a cleanser or scrub. Strongly alkaline, wrecks barrier function over a few weeks.
  • Undiluted essential oils — tea tree, oregano, cinnamon, peppermint. Potent sensitizers. Tea tree has some evidence at low dilution for acne; neat on the skin it causes contact dermatitis.
  • Toothpaste on pimples. The historic active was an antibacterial that has not been standard for decades. What is in there now is abrasives, detergents and menthol, and it produces irritant dermatitis around the spot.

Cinnamon-and-honey masks and apple cider vinegar toners belong on this list too — both are acidic enough to burn at kitchen strength, and both are widely recommended online without any dilution guidance.

What is genuinely fine to do at home

There is a real list, it is short, and every item on it shares a property: it is either anhydrous (no water, so nothing grows) or it is used immediately and rinsed off.

  • Single-ingredient plant oils — jojoba, squalane, sunflower, rosehip — used straight from the bottle as an occlusive last step at night. No water, no preservative problem. If you want the actual mechanism, see our squalane guide.
  • An oil-based first cleanse. Plain jojoba or sunflower oil massaged in and then washed off with your normal cleanser genuinely removes sunscreen well. This is a legitimate DIY win.
  • Oatmeal in the bath. Colloidal oatmeal is a real, well-documented soother for itchy or eczema-prone skin, and grinding plain oats fine and adding them to bathwater is the same idea. Used immediately, rinsed off.
  • A cool compress. A clean cloth and cold water for flushing, puffiness or post-sun heat. Free, safe, works. The device version is in our ice roller roundup if you want something more pleasant to hold.
  • Plain petrolatum as a slugging layer over your moisturizer on dry nights. Not glamorous, extremely effective at reducing water loss, and it cannot spoil.
  • Honey as a rinse-off mask, applied and washed off after ten minutes. Genuinely antibacterial and humectant, and because it is not being stored diluted, the preservation problem does not arise. Do not add water and keep it.

The honest cost comparison

The usual argument for DIY is money. It does not hold up as well as it looks. A basic effective routine — gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen — runs well under fifty dollars and lasts months, and the drugstore versions ranked in our drugstore skincare roundup are cheaper still. Against that, a DIY routine costs you groceries that spoil, a real risk of a reaction that takes weeks to settle, and no way to know which of five ingredients caused it.

Where DIY genuinely wins is the anhydrous list above: a bottle of jojoba oil is a few dollars and does exactly one predictable thing. That is the version of DIY skincare worth keeping — simple, single-ingredient, no water, no acid, no essential oils.

If you have already had a reaction

Stop everything except a bland cleanser and a fragrance-free moisturizer. No actives, no exfoliation, no more experiments, for at least two weeks. If there is blistering, spreading redness, or the burn followed sun exposure after citrus contact, that is a doctor visit and not a skincare problem. Is DIY skincare safe?
Some of it. Anhydrous, single-ingredient options — plain plant oils, petrolatum, an oil-based first cleanse — are genuinely safe. Anything containing water needs a preservative you cannot dose at home, and anything acidic (lemon, vinegar) or strongly alkaline (baking soda) risks a chemical burn or barrier damage.
Why can't I make my own moisturizer at home?
You can make it; you cannot preserve it. A cream is water plus oil plus an emulsifier, and the water phase begins growing bacteria and mold within days. Preservatives are used at fractions of a percent and require accurate measurement, which is why homemade creams are a short-lived and unpredictable product.
Is lemon juice good for your face?
No. It sits at around pH 2, far more acidic than any leave-on cosmetic acid, and contains furocoumarins that cause phytophotodermatitis — a burn triggered by sunlight after contact. It is the single most-reported cause of DIY skincare injury and there is no dilution we would recommend.
Does honey actually do anything for skin?
As a rinse-off mask, yes — it is humectant and has genuine antibacterial properties. The catch is storage: once you dilute honey with water it loses that self-preserving quality and becomes growth medium. Apply it neat, leave it ten minutes, wash it off, do not keep a mixed jar.
Is DIY skincare cheaper than buying products?
Rarely, once you account for ingredients that spoil and the cost of a reaction. A cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen from the drugstore cover a complete routine for well under fifty dollars and last months. The exception is single-ingredient oils, which are genuinely cheap and genuinely work.
